Shoe Power Generator
- power producing shoe for hikers
Final Decision Maker: Hikers
The invention uses a piezoelectric material, meaning electricity generated from physical force, which can be inserted into a shoe in order to produce bursts of electricity. The testing of this material has shown that consistent power outputs of 2- 20 mWs are possible. The benefit of this invention is that it provides enough energy, that is scavenged from movement not produced on the grid, to power small devices when the user is away from an able power source.
The wide array of applications available are: safety lights on the shoes, powering pedometers or GPS units within the shoe, powering any kind of micro-device, and storing power for additional use later to charge small hand-held electronics like mobile phones.
This invention has several technical advantages over other mobile power sources like batteries, and solar panels. It is a very simple set up that works on compression and there are no complex bimorphs, which makes other energy scavenging materials, more problematic. The material being used is light weight, so it is not noticeable for the user and the piezoelectric material requires no voltage bias. Most importantly it is low cost and ecological. The material costs $.02 a shoe and there are no toxic chemicals involved.
This invention would be best used by existing shoe manufacturers as a way for them to gain a competitive edge in their market by producing a shoe that has extra utility. There is already a working prototype and it is continuing to function with noticeable problems, power outputs and consistency have been increasing with further development.
